The Temazcal (from the Nahuatl word temazcalli, meaning “house of steam”) is an ancient purification ceremony used by various pre-Hispanic cultures. It is an ancestral practice that combines the physical, spiritual, and emotional.
Structure: The ceremony takes place inside a round structure, similar to an igloo or low dome, typically built with natural materials. It represents the womb of Mother Earth.
Process:
- Volcanic stones (called “grandmothers” or “fire stones”) are heated in an outdoor fire.
- The red-hot stones are placed in the center of the Temazcal.
- The guide or shaman (known as the “Temazcalero/a”) pours medicinal herbal infusions and water over the hot stones, generating a dense, aromatic steam.
- As the heat and steam envelop the participants, the Temazcalero/a leads songs, meditations, prayers, and shares the medicine of the word.
