What is the Karpay Ceremony?
The term Karpay comes from the Quechua language and basically means “Initiation,” “Energy Transmission,” or “Empowerment.”
It is not just a ritual, but a sacred transfer of power, knowledge, and spiritual lineage. It is the formal act of receiving the energy of the Apus (mountain spirits), the Pachamama (Mother Earth), and the Pampamisayoq (Andean spiritual teachers), integrating them into the initiate’s personal path.

- Main Purpose: The Karpay aims to awaken the seed of a “Paco” (Andean shaman or healer) within the participant. It provides the energetic and spiritual tools necessary to walk with power, clarity, and in harmony (Ayni) with the cosmos.
- The Transfer: The ceremony is performed by an Altomisayoq or Pampamisayoq (Master/Guardian of the Q’ero Lineage, the last living Inca community). They use sacred objects (such as the Misha or Table), voice, breath, and intention to sow the energy of the spirits of nature into the energetic body of the recipient.
Andean Cosmology: Karpay integrates vital concepts such as:
- Ayni: Sacred reciprocity; the Law of Giving and Receiving.
- Kawsay Pacha: The Living World; the vital energy that surrounds us.
- Despacho: Often, the ceremony includes the creation of a Despacho (a complex and beautifully arranged ceremonial offering) to thank the Apus and Pachamama before receiving the initiation.
